Mars

It is about self-assertiveness, aggressiveness, self-confidence, sexuality, athletic spirit, physicality, masculinity, courage, creativeness, initiative and more...

Planetary Journal: MARS [1/5]
KEY WORDS: Power to fight; Fire starter, Control actions; masculine force

The original symbol - the circle - dominated by the cross = the lower overcomes the higher, the lower abuses the higher. The result is physical penetration, activity, will, activity, passion, demand. The primal arrow symbolizes the fertility rune, by which this symbol signifies the domination of the sexual force over the realm of the spirit.

Mars is considered as minor disaster, but at least in many books. And when we see its outer form depicted, Mars is often described as an evil, fierce and untamed warrior, who brings about misery.

But Mars is far from being just a god of war. He symbolizes overcoming and progress. Fighting what is old, like winter. Mars was therefore also referred to as the god of spring.
Mars' forces want to be used with courage, but also with discipline. These forces bring unhappiness only if they are used unrestrainedly, or if they are used too little, only in suggestion.
Man, especially when young, must grow by overcoming obstacles which test what is at his core. This is what Mars symbolizes very clearly when it stands in the sky close to the earth and in opposition to the sun. Then the Sun seems to challenge and to want to show itself to us bright red, full of martial courage. If all revolutionaries choose red as their colour, then this is quite correct from the point of view of the archetype and promises success!

MARS is fighting! But only for a just cause. Good Mars is also disciplined, and it is especially important that he submits completely to the goddess of earthly love and the goddess of heavenly love. In fact, he fights only until he achieves love, of whatever kind. And this can be observed daily in the horoscope due to the relatively fast orbits of Mars, i.e. its transits.

A young man who does not exercise his Martian powers is not equal to his life's tasks. A man should, in due time, deploy his Martian powers, not fearing that there is talk of a little misfortune, but trying them out! And this also means, as Mars teaches, to bow down and submit unconditionally to love when one meets it at birth.
This is also how the message of Mars is translated in astrology: Whoever does not examine Mars in himself - and the horoscope shows how to do this - really falls into misery, because he basely spends his strength and thus turns against his inner instinct.

ARCHETYPE AND MYTHOLOGY:
ARES; MARS; THOR, Archangel SAMUEL

Ares-Mars fascinated people with its red light, which it emitted especially when it was close to the Earth and opposite the Sun. Mars is generally a. planet that constantly challenges the Sun (compare the rhythm and orbits of the two!). It is the god of battles, the lord of battle, and therefore also a proto-demon. It is here that we must not forget that no myth arises without its source in the deep layers of the soul of the people, which knows the ancient connections.

But Ares-Mars was originally also the god of spring, of universal flowering, the victor over the dark forces of winter. That's why his symbols were the plough and the spear. He was therefore both a symbol of peace and a symbol of combat. This is the expression of both sides of this deity. Whoever conquers winter must fight with all his strength, throw himself blindly into the fight and not be defeated.

The tragedy of the portrayal of Ares-Mars is evident in the fable of Cadmus. Cadmus wanted to draw water in Ares' well, but was prevented from doing so by a dragon, which, despite being sacred to Ares, he killed in battle. Ares-Mars did not cease to act, and so from the tooth of the dead dragon arose armed men, who among themselves engaged in a battle. Cadmus, as a punishment, had to serve the god of war, and he had to work hard in his service to understand the meaning of the cycle of the world, because he is obliged to serve Ares for one eternal year, i.e. forever.

Cadmos thus reflects the other side of the god of war, namely the knowledge that when one gets involved in guilt and reconciliation, it cannot remain without consequences. Therefore, Martian problems - even in the astrological sense - can only be solved by discipline, by commitment to higher values. Human experience is well reflected by the fact that the god of war is utterly powerless when abandoned. His mere domination of the low animal instinct leads to nothing. The power which he disposes of must be deployed in a meaningful way, to be guided and controlled in conjunction with the other powers which are in every man.

Ares-Mars thus represents a life force that in itself means nothing. Without it, of course, there would be nothing, but he who uses only this power is tragically subject to it because he feels too strong and has already lost. He who has too little of this power is in danger of his existence unless he mobilizes the help of other soul forces in time.

Planetary Journal: MARS [3/5]

Ares is originally a rural deity who ruled the forests, fields and herds. Then, the protector of the shepherd evolved into the god of war, a typically Roman creation. "Fields of Mars" were the name of the military training and sightseeing grounds of every town that hosted Roman legions. Of the wealth of Greek myths, Rome left him only a steep, destructive gradient. By his strength and strong courage he was able to achieve sensational victories on the battlefield.
This hardheaded and stubborn daredevil has a hard time in his love for Aphrodite-Venus: she denies him not only marriage, but also primacy. This makes the hero vulnerable, undermining his myth of the irresistible conqueror and making him a victim of his own passion.
Although he is the only legitimate son of Zeus and Hera, he remains unpopular with the gods, with the exception of Aphrodite. The goddess, who is the wife of Hephaestus/Vulcan, offers the warrior marriage whenever the opportunity arises. Alerted by Apollo to his antlers, Hephaestus, the god of metalwork, makes a fine wire mesh sieve. With its help, he bound the lovers "in flagranti" on the bed of love and delivered them to the mockery of all Olympus.
In Nordic culture, Mars corresponds to Tyr, the pure warrior deity, rather than Thor, the angry hammer thrower. But even here Loki (torch-bearer, complicit in the destruction of the world) comes into play. At the latest, in the Christian era, he found himself in the pillory as Lucifer.
His business is not thinking, reasoning, strategic considerations. In his relations with other people he is equally violent, volatile, unprejudiced and possessive. He bumps his head against them and experiences rejection. Yet he is the most loyal friend and the most sincere companion among men, and he does not understand why he is not always popular with people.

Planetary Journal: MARS [5/5]

Power may be latent for milleniums, as exemplified in coalbeds, which are reservoirs of solar force; a furnace and engine are required to transmute and make it available as dynamic energy, but once the sleeping giant has been roused from latency to potency it knows no rest or peace till it has expended the last ounce of its prodigious strength. Under strict control, and carefully guided into channel of useful activity, this Martian force is the most valuable servant of mankind; the most powerful agent in the worlds work, an incomparable boon to humanity. But if it escapes control the servant quickly takes mastery, its inimical power of destruction and price of safety from its ravages, but without it the world would be wilderness.

Mars, as a focus for the latent solar life, transmutes into desire, passion and what we may call animal spirits. It is a consuming fire, more dangerous than all the nitroglycerine every manufactured, but also more precious than any other blessing we can have or enjoy.

From Mars we receive a number of our highly-prized virtues as well as some our worst faults. When well-aspected he gives a strong constitution and physical endurance, a positive, independent and self reliant nature, determined and proud, generous and energetic, resourceful and quick to learn, especially when in Aries, Leo, Scorpio or Capricorn, but when he is weak by sign as in Taurus, Cancer, Libra or aspected by squares or oppositions he makes the person quick-tempered, obstinate and spiteful, inclined to drunkenness and criminal acts, cruel and hard, a bully and braggart.

People who have Mars prominent in their horoscopes are eminently practical and play an important part in the worlds work. They are especially proficient in occupations where iron and fire are used for constructive purposes or where sharp instruments are handled. Soldiers, surgeons and butchers, machine workers and iron founders, engineers and man in kindred occupations are of the martial nature.

Ares/Mars: - for war, for aggression, defiance, a sense of the path of loyalty, insults and constant danger, where these affective people also excel in other positions for which courage and fearlessness are necessary qualities.
