The symbol interpretation: The circle in the middle between the semicircle and the cross = the spirit is surrounded by matter and the soul. Result: things and events are observed from two sides. The exchange of all three dimensions through the mediating mind.
Being “The messenger of the gods” to the other planets Mercury has no voice of its own and is even more dependent for expression upon the aspects of other planets, than the Moon, which rules the instinctual mind. So Mercury is really a focus through which the faculty of reason finds expression in the human being to act as a brake upon the lower nature and assist in lifting us from the human, to the divine. Many may and do feel deeply, they may also have valuable knowledge, but they will be unable to express their feelings or shore their knowledge with others, if Mercury is lacking the aspects.
When Mercury is so placed in relation to the Sun its go “BEFORE”[ Prometheus ] the luminary, it has the effect of materially brightening the mind, for the Sun represents the Ego and it may therefore be said that then its path is illuminated by the lamp of reason. On the other hand, if Mercury is so placed, that is rises later then the Sun and thus follows “AFTER”[ Epimetheus ] the luminary, the Ego learns more by “afterthought”, than by “forethought” for it walks comparatively speaking in the dark and must learn a great many of its lessons by experience.
Mercury is strong in the AIRY signs: Gemini; Libra and Aquarius, but he is exalted and therefore most powerful in Virgo. It is in sign Pisces in fall and detriment in same time, which is rare.
ARCHETYPE AND MYTHOLOGY:
Mercurius; Nabu; Hermes; Turms; Thoth; Archangel Rafael; Lug.
Hermes, messenger of the gods, is the offspring of the amorous adventure of Zeus with Maia, daughter of the Titan Atlas. But already in Babylon, Nabu, son of Marduk, was similarly useful, especially as a protective deity of the scribal art, but also of the rain. For the Greeks, the precocious boy is equipped with various skills (He is a master thief) and Hermes/Mercury quickly becomes the darling of all and the mediator between the heavenly gods and the terrestrial people. He presents himself in a vague, double-meaning form, has two shapes, is funny, sarcastic and eloquent, has a sharp tongue, and is responsible for travellers, businessmen and athletes. The offspring of his affair with Aphrodite, Hermaphroditus, is not sexual. He combines masculine energy with feminine gentleness in bodily perfection, without being accepted by one or the other sex. On the contrary: his asexuality is despised.
The signs of Hermes are winged shoes (often the wings are also attached to his hat) and a magical serpent wrapped wand (Caduceus), as there are also healing remedies - including poisons - related to Mercury. That he did not deny himself mercantile relations is shown by the linguistic relics in the various dialects: merchant (from Latin com-mercor = to buy), mercenario (Italian), actually a mercenary for making money.
The Celts worshipped Mercury under the name Lug, as the chief god, the Irish "Lug Samildanach", i.e. he who possesses simultaneously (Samh) multiple (Il) processes (Dan), the all-knowing.
His re-association with the Egyptian Thoth, the god of wisdom and guidance (Who was still a moon god 3000 years BC), later made Hermes/Mercury the patron of magicians and alchemists (Hermes Trismegistos).
The "Great Sage" was already known to the Chaldeans (1000 years BC), and the Arabs in the time of Moses were supposed to revere him as the "thrice greatest". Perhaps he was even supposed to be identical with the god Horus, for from him all secret guidance is available only to the privileged.
This is also a reference to the important side of Hermes, who is active and very in-genuine and always tries to make the wishes of other gods effective and (well-fare)free.
HERMANUBIS was an attempt by the Greeks to unite their ideas of gods with those of the Egyptians - the figure combines Hermes with a staff wrapped by snakes and Anubis with a dog's head. Both are messengers of the gods, guardians of the underworld, bringing the souls of the dead to the rise of death.
Hermes - the youngest of all the gods, the MESSENGER! In all that has been entrusted to the inventive boy, he manifests himself as the top bottom card (lower). To him belong the means and the counter-means: the cure and the antidote; the medicine and the poison; the banks and the thieves; the transactions and the disputes; the clarification and the concealment. Ambiguity is its principle, even in its bi-sexuality.
Quite appropriate for him are the aerial Gemini, which are also the explanation for the fact that the quadratic Mercury simultaneously and without problems escapes into the sister Virgo, which takes him by the hand and vouches for him.
Because he is the embodiment of eternal youth, he offered himself to alchemy as its true patron. His mastery of transforming things - often in reversal - has earned him the reputation of a great magician. Hermes Trismegistos is just one of the titles that alchemy has offered him with respect. The Philosopher's Stone is considered his invention.
In the Egyptian, Thoth displays, besides all his wisdom, also darker components, which come from the realm of death. In Albrecht Durer's "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" Mercury does not come across as cheerful or friendly.
The Romans called him MERCURY and worshipped him with almost as much fervour as the Greeks. He was smooth of skin like his favourite half-brother Apollo and like him he was a deity of light. His light was not golden like Apollo’s, but silver – quicksilver. Indeed the element named “mercury” after him is still sometimes called “quicksilver”, and all things mercurial remind us of this most delightful of gods.
It always finds a way out, but never redemption. And so Mercury remains young, never wise. Mercury naturally knows the depths, but more intellectually, so he can analyse philosophically, but he never becomes a philosopher. He knows much about the dark underworld, but he does not know the core. And he knows everything about daylight, but in a rather curious sense without depth...

Mercury is known as the planet of communication and insightful thinking. The open [Throat chakra] that Mercury represents signifies the strong charisma and receptivity of the individual and his ability to speak his own truth with conviction, but also to put into words what others can only perceive in thought.
Mercury's ellipse passes between Venus and the Sun. It is closer or farther away from the Sun between 46 and 80 million kilometres and is mostly visible to them. Mercury also "pendulates" around the Sun, which usually hides it and makes it visible at most as an evening star in spring, or as an early morning star in autumn. It is twenty times smaller than the earth, and composed of a solid ferrous core with a weak gravitational force.

Sun – Mercury (Relationship)
Mercury
is no further than 28 degrees from the Sun from an Earthly
perspective. We are therefore interested in how far from the Sun it
is and whether it rises and sets before or after the Sun.
Mercury
Prometheus:
Rises
and sets before the Sun. It symbolizes a youthful mind, open to new
knowledge, the courage to try, to experiment, to do things your own
way, regardless of other people's knowledge. The further Mercury is
from the Sun, the more extreme its manifestations of independence of
thought and originality (constant oscillations, uncompactness of
ideas) can be.
Mercury
in conjunction
with the Sun: (distant within 10 degrees), represents the mind that
is submissive, serving personal goals.
Mercury
Epimetheus:
Rises
and sets after the Sun. Unlike Prometheus, it symbolizes the
conservative, prudent mind that holds on to other people's
experiences and knowledge, does not take risks, rather synthesizes
and seeks meaning. Mercury far from the Sun (in elongation) is a sign
of considerable inflexibility and inertia of attitude.
MERCURY
as MORNING
STAR:
In here Mercury belongs to the Gemini section; it seeks contact, creates contact, awakens curiosity, the desire to light up the day. It is quite carefree here, because the coming season, summer, is equal to the land of prosperity. No need to think too far ahead.
MERCURY as EVENING STAR:
Here Mercury has its own knowledge. In its second segment, in Virgo, Mercury is not transformed, but becomes experienced. The season that comes next (winter), is dark, so it is a question of preparing well, of acquiring resources, of keeping order. All these possibilities need to be considered, and so thinking plays a big part. And by thinking, one loses the shallow impulse.
